Mita Giacomini is a fiber artist in Dundas, Ontario whose work has been exhibited at art galleries and museums across Canada and internationally. She is a member of the fiber artist group Connections, and a Juried Artist Member of the Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA).
She takes much of her inspiration from nature, especially fleeting, intimate images that work like apertures to a wider reality – ground shadows tell of the unseen sky above, a bird’s eye hints at an unknown mind. Many pieces represent silhouettes, shadows, and reflections – the graceful, organic abstractions created by the interplay of light and environment.
Her fiber artwork features her original method of “surface weaving,” which combines techniques from hand embroidery and needle weaving with free-motion machine stitching and quilting. The process is incremental and contemplative, yet involves a large element of spontaneity. It results in a richly textured surface with myriad fractured color interactions.
